President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday witnessed the destruction of illegal firearms and ammunition at the National Police Service College, Magadi Field Training Campus in Kajiado County.During the function, 8,700 firearms and 366,000 ammunition were set ablaze as the government seeks to reduce levels of crime in different parts of the nation. The government embarked on massive disarmament before the collection of firearms.

The guns are reportedly obtained from within and outside the country through the black markets. 

President Uhuru Kenyatta said that his government will not tolerate owners of illegal arms.

“It is worth noting that, seizing of ammunition illegally held, is one of the measures that we, as a country, are undertaking to ensure and sustain security in the country,” he said in a statement shared on Facebook by the State House.

 The head of state also said that the government will continue to monitor the activities of crime suspects. 

Uhuru was accompanied by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyamba, Attorney General Paul Kihara, Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku and Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko

The leaders from the region said that they are ready to support the government in the war against the ownership of illegal arms.

 The rise of criminal activities has been a subject of concern among leaders and Kenyans at large in the recent past.
