Orange Democratic Movement party will only back reforms which will be steered through a referendum, Opiyo Wandayi has maintained.
The recently launched Building Bridges Initiative report has divided politicians into two camps, a move that could raise tensions.
Speaking in Ugunja on Saturday, the PAC chair said the ODM party will only endorse the reforms through a referendum.
According to him, the process cannot go through parliament because 'MPs are easily compromised for selfish gains'.
“As much as we acknowledge the fact that the law provides that some recommendations must go through parliament, we want to make it clear that these reforms will only be made possible through a referendum and we won't accept anything short of that, " he said.
Already, ODM leader Raila Odinga has insisted that the process should be people-driven, adding that only a referendum will determine the changes.
Deputy President William Ruto has also backed a referendum even though he insists that most of the proposed changes do not require a plebiscite.
“There have been various reactions over the BBI report. For now, the report is out and here with us," the DP said on Friday.
"We have seen the proposals and the recommendations and all we want is that through a consensus we agree on its implementation,” Ruto said.
