Changing Kenya's leadership system to a parliamentary one will not dim Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 ambitions, political analyst Ambrose Weda has said.
Currently, political temperatures are rising following claims that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) task force might in its report, expand the executive, handing power to the Prime Minister, who will be elected by MPs.
Weda says that should this happen, the country should not be shocked to see the DP, whose presidential ambitions for the 2022 election are already in the public domain, shift interest to the Prime Ministerial seat.
Speaking on Wednesday, he observed that this will actually make it easier for him, as he enjoys popularity among the majority Kikuyu and Kalenjin lawmakers, and also money to buy the support of other MPs.
"Even if it is the premiership, he will still take it. There are more Kikuyu and Kalenjin MPs. He is vibrant, young and rich, he will buy people in parliament," he said on KBC English Service's The Big Conversation Show on Wednesday.
He also observed that the alleged plot to frustrate Ruto's ambitions could be emanating from ODM leader Raila Odinga's quarters, given that the two are currently considered sworn rivals and possible competitors in the 2022 race.
"If Raila wants to be President let him prepare to battle him (Ruto) out in the ballot, beat him and then become the president. Let him not go in rounds about BBI this..," he added.
The BBI and its task force were put up by Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta after their 2018 truce, with the intention of solving the nation's political and leadership shortcomings.
Ruto has since said that the BBI report must be subjected to public scrutiny before being adopted.
