Two teachers have narrated how they narrowly escaped death when suspected members of the Al Shabaab terror group attacked a primary school in Garissa on Monday.
The terror attack on Kamuthe Resource Centre in Kamuthe village left three teachers dead. Among the lucky survivors are Lucy Wanjira and Robert Kabuti who were teachers at the institution.
Lucy Wanjira and her one-year-old baby were forced to hide under a bed for hours as the terrorists attacked the school. While under the bed, Wanjira could not only hear the terror suspects' voices but also sounds of gunshots.
She also revealed that the killers spoke in Swahili language.
“I could hear them (attackers) speak behind my house while I was still under the bed. I prayed to God to spare my life and that of my child. All along there were gunshots and explosions everywhere,” she said.
Robert Kabuti, on the other hand, escaped from his house and ran into the bush when he realized the attackers had invaded the school. He was lucky to be alive as the assailants fired at him while he was in the bush.
“I was literally dodging bullets because they were chasing me and firing for about 100 metres into the bush,” he stated.
He then, later on, alerted police officers of the situation at the institution where he had been teaching for five years.
“I crawled under trees and shrubs and was able to make a phone call to the police,” he added.
