Ailing Olympic legend Nyantika Maiyoro will have all his hospital bills cleared by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, a representative has said.
The athletic champion who first ventured in the track races in 1953 was admitted at Christamarriane Hospital in Kisii where doctors diagnosed him with tuberculosis.
And after a major appeal by local media to have Sh80, 000 paid for his medication, Dr Matiang'i has reportedly offered to help the family off set the bills.
“The CS talked to us through phone and promised to cater for the bills and all costs that we will incur while in hospital,” Maiyoro’s son Ken Rodgers said.
According to doctors at the facility the track legend is responding well to drugs despite him still complaining of chest pains.
“We have seen a major improvement since he was admitted here and we are hoping in the next few days he will be well” said a doctor on condition of anonymity as he not authorized to speak to the press.
Last week, Nyamira County Sports minister Bernard Osumo promised also to have bills catered for but no official communication has been made with regard to the process so far.
In his passionate appeal, the 88-year-old legend had also asked Matiang'i, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga to help him recover a piece of land that was allegedly grabbed.
The 7-acre land, he said, was awarded to him by Founding President Jomo Kenyatta in 1964 following his impressive record on track.
