Known for his populism, Mr Momanyi, a second term legislator, had to look for emergency services from catering firms from around Gusii to reinforce volunteers who had taken tasks of cooking for guests.

By 3pm, the compound, located near Nyabara Ibere was full to capacity forcing others to cheer from outside the home of the MP.

"I was only expecting to host a few people but the number substantially increased beyond my expectations. I am quite excited to see many people around.

"When they come, it's a blessing. Sharing with them even makes me happier than anything. I usually ensure they go home with something small. That is my happiness," he said after the unexpected visitation by locals.

Mr Momanyi is warming up to succeed Governor John Nyagarama, who is serving his second and final term on an Orange Democratic Movement party.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and former Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire are also eyeing the seat even though they are yet to declare interest.

An insider who spoke in confidence claims that Dr Matiang'i is no longer in good terms with Mr Momanyi after his efforts to prevail upon him to quit gubernatorial race failed to materialise.

"They are no longer in good terms. Matiang'i has been lobbying to have Ben Momanyi drop gubernatorial ambitions but nothing concrete is yet to come out," he said.
