Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi has asked MPs to reject the eight percent VAT on fuel as proposed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The Wiper MP wants his colleagues to stand with their earlier decision that suspended implementation of the fuel levy for two years.
Speaking in Mwingi Town on Sunday, Mulyungi said the eight percent proposed by the president will still hurt Kenyans.
He said the government should not implement the VAT that will condemn Kenyans into economic hardship.
“We are going to reject the proposal because it is hurting Kenyans who are already paying hefty taxes,” Mulyungi said.
Mulyungi alleged that the government wants to over tax Kenyans to fund excessive external loans.
He said the VAT should have been suspended to allow for proper consultations.
Mulyungi claimed that the president did not consult anyone before settling on the eight percent VAT on fuel.
MPs will meet on Tuesday and Thursday to discuss the Kenyatta's proposal.
A section of MPs across the political divide have vowed to reject the proposal.
However, Garissa Township MP Aden Duale said the proposal by the president is manageable.
Jubilee MPs will meet with Kenyatta on Tuesday morning before debating on the proposed eight percent on VAT.
