Wrangles being witnessed in the ruling party, Jubilee, over the past few weeks are turning into a nightmare for Deputy President William Ruto in his bid for the presidency in 2022.
The DP who has already shown interest in the country's top seat was seen as a possible successor of President Uhuru Kenyatta in the State House but going by scuttles and divisions in the populous Kikuyu and Kalenjins communities, his presidential ambitions are in jeopardy.
Immediate former Jubilee vice-chairman David Murathe last week caused political firestorms in Jubilee when he publicly said the Kikuyu community does not owe DP Ruto any political support in 2022.
"If he has an MoU with president Kenyatta, that's the agreement between only those two individuals," stated Murathe.
From his remarks, it is very clear that Ruto might not get full political support from the vote-rich central region.
In the recent months, Uhuru Kenyatta has not shown his intentions to fully support his deputy's bid to succeed him. He has shunned away from the talks, raising political confusion over his choice. To further dent his deputy's ambitions, he frankly said his choice will be a 'shocker' to many.
If the 'shocker' according to the president will be another preference, his large base support will vote for his choice thus DP Ruto losing.
The presidency has traditionally been determined by the populous five communities, the Kikuyu, Luhya, Kalenjins, Luo and Kamba. Judging by Raila's dominance in Luo and Nyanza communities, Ruto will be depending only on his backyard, the Kalenjins, but there is also a possibility of Baringo Senator Gideon Moi vying thus splitting Kalenjins votes.
The Kikuyu community as it has been their tradition, they might field a candidate as usual thus DP Ruto getting votes only from his diehards. This will dent his chance of clinching the top seat.
