Mvurya has been tasked to explain the criteria used in the selection of the beneficiaries of the scheme as well as the amount of money spent on the same.

The county officials have defended the scheme even as analysts suspect it is a scam. Mvurya unveiled the program in 2014 in which he sought to airlift students to India.

The Governor unveiled the program with the aim of training youths in different sectors. The county government of Kwale had allocated Sh53 million to the program.

The new scheme was meant to benefit 68 students. The scholarship included a monthly stipend of Sh 9,500.

Education executive Mangale Chiforomodo has come out to defend the program. He said that it was reached after an analysis was conducted to establish its need to the residents of the area.

“We did a needs analysis for the county and found out that we required lawyers, medical doctors, engineers and ICT specialists. The fees would be paid only for students who would take these courses,” he said, as quoted by Daily Nation.

It has, however, emerged that there are no ICT specialists, doctors, lawyers and engineers trained under the program. It remains unclear what transpired after the funds were allocated to the scheme.

Nominated MCA Suleiman Nzala told claims the officials tasked with overseeing the program proposed the names of their relatives in local institutions of learning at the expense of the poor and intelligent students.
