The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has declared five brands of maize flour unfit for human consumption.
KEBS through a tweet this Saturday afternoon listed 5 different brands of maize flour that are not suitable for human consumption after being found with high levels of aflatoxin.
"Following continued market surveillance as well as multiple public reports, @KEBS has noted that some brands of maize meal products (Unga wa Ugali) offered for sale do not meet the requirements of Kenya Standards. We, therefore, wish to inform the public that," Kebs in a statement
The affected brands are:
1. Dola Maize Meal. The flour is manufactured by the Kitui Flour Mills located in Mombasa County.
2. Kifaru Maize Meal, which is a product of Alpha Grain Millers Ltd (Kifaru) found in Nairobi County.
3. Starehe Maize Meal, manufactured by Pan African Grain Millers, Nairobi.
4. Two Ten (210) maize meal from Kenblest Limited, Thika branch and
5. Jembe Maize Meal manufactured by Kenblest Limited, Eldoret branch.
Affected millers have been ordered to recall all affected branded from the market with immediate effect. They are also asked to institute corrective measures.
"Consequently, the respective permits have been suspended and the manufacturer instructed to discontinue manufacturing or offering for sale the affected maize meal products," KEBS added in a published statement.
