Kenya Commercial Food and Allied Workers (KUCFAW) Uasin Gishu organising secretary Rodgers Ombati claimed that the workers work for over 12 hours yet they are paid peanuts.

“It is sad that despite the workers reporting to work at 7am and leaving at 9pm, they are only paid Sh350 which is a drop in the ocean as compared to the work that they are subjected to. How do they expect them to feed their families with such payment?” asked Ombati.

He further claimed that the workers don’t have uniforms and have been prevented from joining unions which can agitate for their rights.

“It is sad that workers also don’t have washrooms and drinking water, they are being abused by the employer and are not allowed to join unions which is against the law,” added Ombati.

He stated that the workers will continue with the demonstrations until their grievances are addressed.

Asman Machinda, one of the workers, further claimed that their employer does not pay their NSSF and NHIF contributions despite most of them working for over ten years at the same station.

Efforts to reach Bhayko Distributors Director Ashit Kotak were futile as he declined to address journalists.
