Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has asked legislators to pass a law that will see hospitals get free cancer drugs and exempt taxes on all equipment used in cancer treatment.
The Governor said this will allow private hospitals to procure equipment at a cheaper rate which will subsequently reduce the cost of treatment.
"When the hospitals procure equipment at a cheaper price, treatment will be affordable as cancer is the most dangerous disease now and its treatment is very expensive," said Mandago.
Speaking during the burial ceremony of Sammy Kiplagat Rono, brother to former Nandi Governor Cleophas Lagat in Kurguny, Nandi County, Mandago reiterated his county government's commitment to making sure there are enough drugs in public hospitals.
The county boss further asked legislators to shoot down a bill that seems to make it mandatory for counties to procure drugs from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA).
"Don't allow that bill to go through. We want it to be like the way it was. What if there are no drugs in KEMSA? When there is a shortage in KEMSA, we can procure somewhere else," he added.
