Saunders was arrested in Cheshire and presented before District Judge Nicholas Sanders who jailed him on Wednesday, after he refused to take an breathalyzer test.

The judge heard that the former player refused to cooperate as was demanded by policemen who flagged him down, and admitted that he had taken two pints of Chester Races.

When arraigned before a magistrate's court, he claimed that he refused to be breathalyzed due to his asthma, which saw the judge brand him "arrogant", due to his prominence.

“Throughout these proceedings you have shown yourself to be arrogant, thinking you are someone whose previous and current role in the public eye entitles you to be above the law," he said at his Chester courtroom.

Saunders who is currently engaged as a pundit was also banned from driving for 30 months, but was released on bail on Thursday, in a hearing that was done in private.

The judge heard that he was speeding and driving over the white lanes in his Audi vehicle, before two officers pulled him over.
