Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has poked holes into the probe of on Keroche Breweries directors Tabitha Karanja and her husband Joseph Karanja over tax evasion claims.
Murkomen wondered how much the owners possess in net worth after it emerged that they have evaded tax amounting to Sh14 billion.
The Senate Majority Leader who has been asking the DPP to reconsider the charges against local entrepreneurs questioned the amount of tax quoted.
“If it is true as alleged that Keroche evaded taxes worth 14B then what really is the net worth of Keroche as a company?” he tweeted.
Earlier on, the senator had asked the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji to reconsider his directive to arrest the Karanja's.
He alluded that there are ways the government can resolve the matter rather than resulting in a court case.
The two, Tabitha and her husband are currently at the Milimani Law Courts taking plea. Through their lawyer, James Orengo, the tycoons have maintained that they are law abiding and the claims against them are baseless.
“The accused persons are one entity. The two (Tabitha Karanja & Joseph Karanja) are charged as directors...the company has only one pass and a common source of revenue. We ask you to put that in consideration,” he said.
