A report indicating that Migori County loses 4 million shillings to vandals every month has emerged.
While having an exclusive interview with the County Water Executive Committee Member Rebecca Ghati in her office, she decried vandalism of water conduits, a move she said attributed to constant water shortage in the county.
Ghati said the provision of water services to residents as a mandate of the county government was hampered by constant vandalism of water conduits.
She singled out Awendo town and Oruba area in Migori as the worst affected by vandalism adding that the county could not withstand such a loss.
“The County spent over 13 million in paying water bills to seven utilities across the county but it is unfortunate that the much-needed resource cannot be accessed due to vandalism,” Ghati said.
Migori Water and Sanitation Director Frank Marita said fittings, gate valves and twelve-inch conduit pipes were carted away by vandals who he said operate at night.
Marita added that the firm had contracted Key-Watch (a security firm) to secure the property but the firm is reluctant due to what they believe are greater security threats posed to them.
“We call upon the residents to own this projects because they are sole beneficiaries but those found culpable will face the due legal process,” he added.
