Ruto has been frequenting the region lately, earning a handsome backing from leaders who are in support of his 2022 presidential bid.

Ruto's latest visit to the area was on Monday, when he led a section of allies in attending a bullfighting event at Malinya, Ikolomani, Kakamega county.

Speaking during the function, area MP Bernard Shinali asked the DP to give back by picking his running mate from the region.

He proposed among others, Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi.

"We are happy that you came here today. Nobody should lie to you that Western is divided. The region will definitely back your 2022 presidential quest, however, we want you to have one of our leaders as a running mate.

"There are many: Mudavadi, Wetang’ula or even myself," the lawmaker suggested at the event..

Former area Senator Boni Khalwale echoed the remarks. He added that its time the region collaborated with individuals in power to earn a slot in the government come 2022.

He doubted the many presidential aspirations emerging from regional leaders, predicting a failure.

“In 1997, we tried it out with the late Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa, but failed miserably. That is until we joined forces with retired President Mwai Kibaki," he said.
