The Governor of Kisii County James Ongwae has signed an executive order for the demolition of informal settlements erected in wetlands.
The order will also see all eucalyptus trees in these areas cut down.
Ongwae on Monday said that the demolitions will be conducted in a span of three months according to the Environmental Management and Coordination Act of 1999.
"Today, I signed an executive order compelling the county government to cut down eucalyptus trees planted on wetlands and marsh areas," Ongwae said.
"The move is aimed at conserving and protecting water towers and riparian land. Regrettably, our rivers have dried posing a great risk to the current and future generation," he added.
Ongwae cited that the exercise was important because the springs in the county are drying up and boreholes running out of water due to the eucalyptus trees along wetlands and marshals.
The demolition of informal structures is, on the other hand, aimed at protecting the lives of people as well as towers.
This will be made possible through the Department of Administration comprising of sub-county and ward administration, the department of water and environment working hand in hand with the national government to execute the plans.
