In an interview with K24 on Thursday, Khalwale said that the huge foreign debt is a burden to the general Kenyan population. He noted that it is unfortunate that the Jubilee Government has continued to borrow billions for development purposes.

The former Ikolomani MP said that time has come for the government to rethink about the borrowing policy lest it plunges the nation into more financial woes.

He said that the government made a mistake to borrow for the Standard Gauge Railway. He said that the project should be implemented alongside other nations in East Africa.

"According to me, the SGR should not have been developed as a national project but as an East African project that would have been more profitable,” Khalwale said as quoted in a tweet by K24.

The vocal politician who has thrown his weight behind Deputy President William Ruto, also said that there is no way SGR will pay the debt the government acquired.

"SGR would be profitable if it runs all the way from Mombasa, Kampala, Kigali and finally to Juba. If we think that it will pay for itself by carrying goods from Mombasa to Naivasha, it’s a lie!" he said.
