Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has announced a crackdown on criminal gangs operating in different parts of the country.
Speaking on Thursday at the opening of Kagwathi Police Station in Tetu, Nyeri County, Matiang’i said that the government will not tolerate leaders who want to use criminal gangs in various parts of the nation to cause fear and discomfort among Kenyans.
He said that the government has put in place different measures to ensure that the gangs are dealt with accordingly.
Matiang’i also said that the days of those leaders behind the gangs are numbered.
He specifically pointed out the resurgence of the gangs in the area, saying that the government is aware of leaders who want to use the illegal channel to cause fear.
Matiang’i also said that they will be vigilant on attempts of criminal gangs to radicalize some of the youths in the society. He further said that the drinking dens for illicit brew have become the main target for recruitment of the criminals.
“We will be firm in matters security and tell those political leaders to allow us carry out our security mandate,” said Matiang’i.
He also urged Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga to rally other leaders in the war against the gangs.
Matiang’i was accompanied by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai during the visit to Nyeri.
