Luos are known for their strange beliefs, some of which though real and regularly happen, are too scary and strange to be believed by outsiders.

One of such is the said ability by corpses to make decisions, including ability to refuse to be transported, a real situation that at times leads to accidents.

According to my grandfather Onguko K'Owino, a corpse can as well refuse to be transported in the same car with a person who was their enemy, and has to be begged and convinced.

Failure to do this, and if the mourners insist on proceeding with the journey, the vehicle will either not move or end up overturning.

The begging has to be done by friends, and close relatives and if the departed completely refuses, the people might be forced to alight one by one to identify the bad person, or the body turned to have the head of the coffin facing behind.

Another instance is where you are not allowed to lose bodies of those who drowned in rivers or lakes.

In such a situation, one is supposed to plead with the floating body to come and if correctly done, the body will indeed defy water movement and come up.

Failure to do this, the dead person will come back to haunt (chieno) you, and demand questions as to why you never searched for their bodies, and took them back for burial.

A person who was murdered will cry and shed tears before their burial.

I know you are amazed and maybe scared, bit that's Luo Nyanza for you.
