A middle aged man is nursing serious injuries at a Nyamira Hospital after he was beaten by angry members of the public for allegedly attempting to rape his neighbour's daughter.
The incident happened on Sunday evening at Nyamare village in Masaba North, Nyamira County.
Area chief Beatrice Mwango said the suspect Lawrence Aming'a was busted forcing the girl into a nearby maize farm.
"Aming'a descended on the girl while she was returning home from the river where she had gone to fetch water and tricked her that he was going to give her sugarcane which he had kept in the maize farm. Luckily the girl's mother who was following her spotted Aming'a holding her hands into the maize farm and raised alarm," said Mwango.
The chief said members of the public responded quickly to alarm and apprehended the suspect before he could escape.
"The public descended on the suspect with kicks and blows before Nyumba Kumi officials rescued him and rushed him to a local hospital because he was bleeding," she noted.
She warned the public against beating crime suspects and reiterated that crime suspects should be surrendered to authorities.
Ms Mwango urged men to stop chasing young girls for sex, adding that the government will take stern actions against culprits.
