It has been said by many pundits that Deputy President William Ruto is an outsider in terms of the aristocracy, one of the key elements that can catapult one to the highest office in the land.
The handshake also argued to have been orchestrated by the elites in the political scene, mainly to tame the ascension of DP Ruto to the house on the hill. The son of a peasant, the self-declared hustler, remains on course, and the man to beat come 2022.
The other day, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi visited opposition chief Raila Odinga’s turf, Karachuonyo, Homabay County. Indeed leaders came out and talked of a possible partnership between the son of the second president and Raila Odinga. The Baringo Senator himself talked about it.
To the discerning mind, it seems that this partnership is aimed at stopping one man – William Ruto. He has so far reached a level where he can no longer be written off, and leaders must be wary of him to avoid the same scenario that befell aristocrats from Mt Kenya immediately after the death of the late Jomo Kenyatta.
With a job at AU, Raila’s political activities will be slowed down. He may not be a present full time like DP Ruto, to marshal his support base. That is a key point that Ruto scores.
On Senator Moi, it is arguable that his popularity rarely goes beyond his father’s name. It is for the same reason leaders have been trooping to see the ageing father in Kabarak. As such, he does not pose a significant threat to DP Ruto.
If indeed the referendum will take place, it will shape the way the 2022 politics will be conducted. Even with this in mind, the man to beat is the presumptive Jubilee Party candidate William Ruto.
