The second term governor said that the move was reached following a damning expose by NTV dubbed RedAlert.

Mutua says that he is committed to protecting the lives of the residents by all means. He also warned traders against using chemicals to preserve meat and other food substances.

“Following a media report on meat that may be unfit for human consumption due to presence of chemicals being sold in supermarkets, I have been given a laboratory report showing that a sample of meat sold at the Naivas Supermarket at Gateway Mall in Mavoko, Machakos County, had 3.286 milligrams of an additive that should not be used in meat," he said in part.

He also congratulated the media house for exposing the rot in the market. He reiterated that his government will continue supporting the national government as far as protecting the interest of the general public is concerned.

Mutua also said that the health of the people is important and reminded everyone to take responsibility.

The national government has since embarked on a probe to determine whether the meat sold in supermarkets is fit for consumption. The government is collecting samples from different butcheries in supermarkets to ascertain this.
