Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala has been arrested.
The first term senator was arrested by sleuths form the office of the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over the recent killings by a criminal gang in Matunguu, Kakamega County.
He was arrested in Kisumu.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Thursday visited the scene of the attack, which left 18 people dead.
The senator is currently being questioned over his links to the deaths following the public outcry.
Matiang'i deployed General Service Unit (GSU) officers to the scene of the crime. He warned the government will not take it lightly following the murder of innocent civilians.
He also assured the general public that the government will not sit back and watch its citizens murdered in cold blood.
"We will go to the direction the investigations will take. We don't care who you are under the political class and your status in society. We will arrest and deal with you as per the law," he warned, as quoted by Standard.
During the tour, Matiang’I was accompanied by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai.
The two promised to work together to ensure the families of the victims get justice following the incident that has caused public uproar.
Leaders from different quarters have condemned the murders.
