President Uhuru Kenyatta's stern warning against leaders engaging in early campaigns may have punctured DP William Ruto's team, it has been established.
At Kenneth Matiba's funeral, Uhuru openly warned against early campaigns, a directive that seemingly targeted his DP.
But Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i would turn out to be victim after his persistent trips to Gusii region where curtailed by the president's directive.
"He can't go against his employer that's why you can't see him in meetings interpreted as political meetings.
"Since then, he is careful with the DP's camp to avoid a possible retaliation from the president," said a source close to the CS.
For months, Matiang'i was leading pro-Ruto campaigns in the larger Gusii region until the directive was issued.
In fact, a section of Gusii MPs backed him to bargain for running mate position in Ruto's lineup on grounds that the community's voted can warrant such a position.
It is however not clear whether Matiang'i will pursue the interest or will shift his focus to Nyamira gubernatorial race.
