The traders who were affected have estimated accrued losses to millions of shillings in the worth of their stocks that were in the shops.

Even as the traders count losses, the cause of the fierce inferno that started from one of the shops was not immediately established. However, one of the affected traders said they could not salvage anything since the fire was spreading so fast and that the county fire fighters took long to respond.

"The fire began in one of the shops here. We could not rescue any of our property as the fire was spreading so fast,' said a trader only identified as Mokua.

Hundreds of shoppers and onlookers just watched helplessly as the fire roared to the adjacent buildings.

Sparks from nearby electrical cables also fueled the fire and hampered efforts to salvage any property.

Residents who flocked the scene tried to put out the huge fire but eventually gave up after running short of water.

Garissa County fire brigade arrived moments later after the fire had completely razed down the property.
