The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at Metembe village in Kegogi, Marani in Kisii County.

Neighbours said the suspect, Leonard Manyara, quarrelled with his wife Millicent Magoma before he allegedly killed the baby.

“Manyara wanted to sell a piece of land but his wife rejected the proposal arguing they have six sons who will inherit the land. Manyara chased her away and returned into the house where the baby was sleeping and he strangled him,” said Philip Magato.

Mr Magato said Manyara’s wife returned home at 7pm only to find the baby lying in bed dead.

"Magoma returned to check on her baby only to find him dead. She screamed and we arrived to witness the incident. Manyara was sleeping in the sitting room and we arrested him, beat him up before he confessed to killing the baby,” said Magato.

Area chief Fredrick Omosa said the suspect was later rescued by police officers from the Rigoma Police Station.

“Were it not for the police officers, the suspect could have been lynched. He is currently being remanded at Rigoma police station and he will be arraigned in court on Friday,” he said.

The baby’s body was taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
