A Nairobi court has issued a warrant of arrest against Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Alfred Keter after he failed to appear in court on Thursday morning for the pre-trial hearing of a forgery case.
Issuing the orders, Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi said the suspect (Keter) had breached the law by failing to attend a crucial court session without any justifiable reason.
Citizen Digital reports that Keter was scheduled to appear in court today to confirm whether the exhibits and other documents the prosecution intends to rely on the case have been supplied to the defense.
In July 2018, Alfred Keter was arrested by Banking Fraud Investigation Unit officers attached to the Department of Criminal Investigation for allegedly forging treasury bills valued at Sh.633 million.
He was charged alongside two others, businessman Arthur Sakwa and Madat Saburali.
The case was supposed to be heard in December last year but was pushed to January 31, 2019 to allow the prosecution team to locate crucial documents which had gone missing.
The prosecution told the court that they had misplaced more than 40 crucial documents and needed more time to find them before proceeding with the case.
Despite the defence counsel objecting the fresh application by the prosecution, Chief Magistrate Andayi pushed the case to a later date.
Keter is facing charges of conspiracy to defraud the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) of treasury bills worth KSH633 Million by presenting bills that had been issued by the government way back in 1990.
Keter pleaded not guilty and was released on cash bail after spending three days in custody.
