The Machakos government has waived tuition fees for county technical college students to boost enrolment in technical colleges.
Governor Alfred Mutua said the youth must have skills to be able to get jobs.
“Youth empowerment is critical for self-development. My government has decided to provide opportunities for the youth who need to study in our polytechnics regardless of their economic background,” Mutua said.
“In addition to the bursaries for those studying in colleges and universities, we’ve, from today, waived tuition fees for all residents who seek education in county polytechnics," added he.
Mutua addressed the press outside his office in Machakos town on Tuesday.
He said free polytechnic education will empower the youth, make them competitive in the job market and enable them to work anywhere across the globe.
“My government has sourced money from the World Bank and other partners. I encourage Machakos youth, men, and women to register and study,” Mutua said.
The county has 39 polytechnics and plans to open more in Muthwani, Muthesya, Kangundo West and Mwala-Makutano.
The county is also providing free ECDE teacher training. Each ward will get Sh2 million for secondary school bursaries.
