Music lovers in the country and specifically the Nyanza region have suffered a blow following the departure of celebrated Luo Benga maestro Jerry ‘Kajon’ Jalamo who made his final bow on Tuesday.
The founder of the Extra Hekaheka Band died while receiving treatment at the Owen Hospital in Kisumu aged 60. He was undergoing treatment for various ailments.
Reports on Standard Digital indicate that Jalamo who has reportedly been ailing for some time now lost the battle at around 2:00 PM, days after an initial minor surgery, after which he was declared steady.
Jalamo who hails from Kano Plains in Kisumu County was known for among others, his Nyar–Kasulle, Selleh Nyar Suba and Ayiecho Olweny track which he composed in honor of former Muhoroni lawmaker.
He worked with former and departed benga heavyweights like the late Aluoch Jamaranda during the initial stages of his music career, before moving to establish his own band.
Prior to that, he served as a bouncer to another Benga veteran Okatch Biggy who died in 1996 and his Heka Heka Band which has since lost its relevance.
Jerry has left behind a large family.
