President Uhuru Kenyatta's 'washenzi' remark has elicited mixed reactions among Kenyans.
The Head of State was responding to those who were opposed to his development agenda in other regions other than Central Kenya.
This comes after Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria accused Uhuru of neglecting his Mt Kenya backyard.
Speaking during an event at the Thika Stadium on New Year's Eve, Kuria argued the Mt Kenya region was lagging behind in terms of development despite residents turning out in large numbers to vote for the Jubilee government in the 2017 polls.
"I want to say this, as we come to the end of 2018, I want you to think seriously about your habit of voting in large numbers only to end up missing out on development projects," said Kuria.
The statement seems to have angered Uhuru who noted that he would not be intimidated by those propagating petty politics.
Speaking on Monday during the launch of the Mama Ngina Drive waterfront project in Mombasa, Uhuru said his focus is to ensure development projects are distributed across the country.
"I will ensure every corner of this country gets development. That way, these politics of patronage will end so that all areas can grow regardless of who is in power. Kwa hivyo hawa washenzi waachane na mimi (let those idiots stop bothering me)," said Uhuru.
The Kiswahili slang which loosely translates to 'idiots' has gained popularity among Kenyans on social media, with a section of them creating memes to make light of the situation.
