Nakuru’s Hyrax Museum under the National Museums of Kenya has entered into a memorandum of understanding with County Government of Nakuru as one way of developing heritage sites.
Speaking at the museum on Wednesday during the signing of the MoU, National Museums of Kenya director general Mzalendo Kibunja said the MoU opens a new chapter for the museum.
“Under the MoU, the expertise in National Museums Kenya can now be channeled down to counties as one way of promoting our heritage,”said Dr.Kibunja.
Under the MoU, Kibunja added that National Museums of Kenya will be offering training and education activities for youths in Nakuru county.
“We are committed in ensuring that the cultural heritage are promoted and therefore as National Museums Kenya, we will be offering training to youths and communities should now start developing creative activities,” said Dr. Kibunja.
Kibunja also called on county government to ensure land for cultural is protected. developers.
“The county government should ensure the land is secure and remains for the purpose it should be for,” said Dr.Kibunja.
Nakuru County CEC for trade and Tourism Dr. Peter Kityenya, who spoke during the signing of the MoU, that was also witnessed by Nakuru county Secretary Benjamin Njoroge, and Director Antiquities Sites and Monuments Dr. Purity Kiura, called on Nakuru county residents to embrace tourism.
“Let us embrace the tourism attraction sites and also help to market them,” said Dr. Kityenya.
Lilian Amwanda, Curator Hyrax Museum, commended the National Museums Kenya for the MoU.
“This is a great move in ensuring the promotion of culture and heritage. Secondly, the youths of Nakuru will now be empowered through the various activities that will be taking place here,” said Amwanda.
Currently, there are 38 National Museums and over 300 monuments in the Country.
The meeting was also attended by Nakuru County Director Culture and Gender Alice Gekonde, chairman Youths, Sports and Culture committee in the county assembly of Nakuru MCA Eddy Kiragu, Kivumbini ward MCA Wilbur Onyango among others.
