Harambee Stars on Saturday missed the opportunity to top of group F of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification as they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Ghana's black stars.
However, Stars will still take part in the AFCON 2019 competition in Egypt as they hold the second spot.
This emphatically is not the scenario that Sebastian Migne envisioned when he named a 23-man squad to face Ghana in Accra.
Harambee Stars held on to a defensive master class as they put Ghana at bay. But their tactical plan was finally broken in the 83rd minute when goalkeeper Patrick Matasi misjudged Ekubans shot to put Ghana ahead.
There were grounds to believe that 2019 would be Kenya's year. The 1-0 loss was a step in the right direction, against a very good opposition. There were signs, though, that coach Migne is just starting to get the parts to click.
Coach Migne's defensive line was solid, and all in all, it was a useful morale boost for the Harambee Stars as they prepare to play in June.
The end of the campaign now means Kenya is among four East African countries who will be donning the competition. Kenya will be joined by Tanzania and Uganda alongside Burundi who will take part in the first ever AFCON tournament.
