During the meeting organised by DP William Ruto's political confidants, Barasa was quoted by sections of the media 'wishing God had called Mr Odinga' as part of his scathing attack to the ODM leader.

"If I go to heaven one day, I will ask God why he did not take away Raila Odinga because this is a fellow we don't need in this country. When you see him you bleed," Barasa said in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon

The MPs were giving a rejoinder to Senate Minority Leader James Orengo's plot to initiate impeachment motion against Ruto, in which they claimed that the Siaya senator was under instructions from Raila Odinga.

And on Wednesday, Mr Barasa defended his statement, insisting that he wished Mr Odinga got 'spiritual intervention' from God to change his ways on handling issues.

"I have read a section of media reports that I wished Rt Hon Odinga death during the press conference. That's untrue. I simply meant that Odinga should be redeemed by God to change his ways," said Barasa.

Mr Barasa, one of few Jubilee Party MPs from Western Kenya, is a close ally of the DP and has organised several functions for the DP across the region since 2017.

The impeachment debate has been dominating airwaves since Sunday when Mr Orengo vowed to move on with his plans. The ODM party has however distanced itself from the talk.

MPs allied to Ruto on Tuesday insisted that Mr Odinga is keen to have DP Ruto impeached so that he takes over as DP in the remainder of President Uhuru Kenyatta's term.
