Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati now wants Nairobi governor Mike Sonko to go ahead and demolish Weston Hotel allegedly owned by Deputy President William Ruto if it is found to be built on riparian land or road reserve.
Arati wants Sonko and the multi-agency team leading the demolitions to be merciless and bring down all buildings constructed on riparian land.
The ODM MP said that Nairobi has suffered because of buildings constructed on riparian land and road reserves.
He said that some unscrupulous business people have encroached on public road hindering development.
“Governor Sonko should not fear anyone and should go on and bring down all buildings build on riparian land including Weston Hotel,” the ODM MP said during an interview on Milele FM on Monday.
The MP further called for arrest and prosecution of government officials who allegedly approved construction on riparian land.
“People who approved these buildings must be arrested and forced to compensate innocent people who bought this land and constructed buildings,” he said.
On Monday, the multi-agency team leading demolitions in the city said it will resume the exercise this week after a week-long break.
The team led by Inspector Julius Wanjau said it is targeting more buildings which are sitting on riparian land.
Last week, Governor Sonko said over 4000 buildings among them Taj shopping mall and Weston hotel will be demolished.
The multi-agency team has since issued a two weeks’ notice to Taj Mall occupants to vacate the building.
