The senate has supported a proposal to name the Muranga University of Technology after former Kiharu MP and opposition politician the late Kenneth in Matiba.
The motion sponsored by nominated senator Isaac Mwaura has been adopted by the Senate, with members, including area Senator Irungu Kangata was welcoming the proposal.
Kangata praised the ex-Minister who died last year as one who gave IP his all in the fight for second liberation, which left him disabled after suffering a stroke in Kamiti Prison in 1990.
“He also lost his personal health. By the time he passed away, he was quite a sick person and to me, that epitomises several people in this world who have gone to that extent,” he is quoted by the Sunday Nation.
Mwaura, before the unanimous approval of the motion, had urged his colleagues in the legislative house to honour the late Matiba in a way that will immortalize him and his efforts.
“We have a culture of eulogising people when they die, attending funerals in thousands and giving great speeches; but we soon forget them,” he said.
Until his death, Matiba who took Daniel Moi's government head on in the pursuit for multiparty democracy in the 90s, was sickly, following a series of detentions.
Mwaura also urged the leader to look at his contribution to national development, and his fearless collisions with the KANU party, alongside ex-Nairobi mayor Charles Rubia, in a bid to end Moi's dictatorial rule.
