The two drowned when their makeshift boat capsized as they navigated the murky waters at Wath Okello, Othoro area in North Kanyamkago.

Locals said the deceased attended a prayer meeting across the river and were making their way back when the incident occurred.

Eyewitnesses recounted how the two had sought the service of a young boy to raw them ashore but the boy lost control of the boat and jumped leaving the two behind.

"I had hosted the two at my home for a night vigil and they left at dawn. I saw them off but at around 7 am, I got a call that the two had drowned while crossing the river,"  said Vitalis Okuku, a local resident.

The incident, according to locals is the fifth to happen within a span of one year and locals are worried that more lives could be lost if proper measures are not taken to improve the infrastructure in the area.

"We have lost many lives to boat tragedies in this river and its high time the government intervened and build us a bridge," said Chrispin Odhiambo.

Area MCA George Omamba and Uriri MP Mark Nyamita who witnessed the rescue operation called on the government to provide equipment to aid in the rescue mission.

"I'm certain the government is not keen on losing her citizens and I, therefore, appeal that a bridge linking the two communities be constructed for the future," Omamba said.

"Some pupils are compelled to use a wooden footbridge which is equally dangerous. The county government should avail resources for the construction of footbridges," added Nyamita.
