The founding president once loved and wanted to marry Margaret Njambi. Margaret Njambi had then been kicked out by her husband after the death of their first two children.

Margaret Njambi was a traditional healer and also a seer who used to be consulted during calamities. She helped the Mau Mau freedom fighters in their struggle against the British rule.

Her fame spread like bushfire and news reached Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, then at Githunguri Teachers Training College as their head. He became interested in her and even wanted to marry her.

Njambi’s father, Muui, however, turned down marriages offers from Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. He had already received bride price from her first husband and couldn’t give her to someone else again nor return the bride price to his in-laws, as he was a strict adherer to the Kikuyu traditions.

Mzee Jomo Kenyatta left a disappointed man after his love journey hit a rock. However, Margaret Njambi remained his close friend. She went back to her first husband whom she sired with other two children.

The nation learnt of Njambi when Citizen Television tried covering her story in her home in Muthiga village in Kiambu County.

Unfortunately, all their cameras broke down four times trying to uncover her weird life story. She later died in 2017 aged 120 years.
