The region has in most occasions found itself in the opposition, mostly in fights with the government, which has been blamed for the slowed development rate in the area.

Owino now says that area leaders will rally behind the 2018 truce between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to compensate the region.

Speaking at the Nomiya Church in Kisumu on Sunday, the MP said that together with his colleagues, they are eyeing development projects from the state, and will, therefore, support the president in his agenda.

"With this new truce, we want to keep mum and support the government build our region," Owino who spoke in the company of 10 other parliamentarians allied to Raila was quoted by the Standard.

Present MPs included Rozah Buyu (Kisumu Woman Rep), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Tom Kajwang (Ruaraka) Millie Odhiambo (Suba North), Ongondo Were (Kasipul) Eve Obara (Kasipul Kabondo) and Olago Aluoch (Kisumu West).

The MPs echoed Owino's remarks, pledging their readiness to stick to the handshake "if the State can accommodate their interests and serve all Kenyans equitably".

Uhuru and Raila are banking on their truce as a unification and national healing strategy, in a nation heavily divided down political and tribal lines.
