The reduction in salaries has not augured well with teachers from different parts of the country.
The teachers have now resorted to social media and other platforms to decry underpayment, arguing that they are being overworked. Through the Kenya Women Teachers Association (Kewota), the teachers noted that they want their salaries reviewed.
They argued that they cannot afford to pay their bills and enjoy their financial growth because of the meagre salaries they earn at the end of the month.
They have now called for the disbandment of the Ms Dorothy Muthoni-led union, failure to which they will down their tools.
The teachers from both Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) want their salaries increased instead of being reduced.
Kuppet National Gender Secretary Ms Catherine Wambilyanga has urged the teachers not to sit back and watch their salaries being deducted. The teachers lamented that the commission never involved them before reaching the decision to reduce their monthly remuneration.
“Deducting teachers’ salary without personal consent is criminal and those affected must forward their complaint letters and copies of their pay slips to kuppet.kenya@gmail.com<mailto:Kuppet.kenya@gmail.com> or WhatsApp 0711870044 to immediately stop the remittance as we seek a court injunction,” Wambilyanga said, as quoted by the Nation.
The teachers also vowed to remain united as they fight for their rights.
