An elected MP in Kisii County has claimed that DP William Ruto's decision to support the referendum is insincere.
Bonchari MP John Oyioka said DP Ruto should not be trusted.
"Ruto is not sincere in supporting the referendum. He publicly backed it to remain relevant ahead of the 2022 elections but, in reality he is not in support of it," he said.
Mr. Oyioka who was elected on PDP, argued that politicians who are supporting the referendum should not give conditions.
"Leaders should back the referendum without giving unnecessary conditions. The constitutional changes are good for Kenyans since the huge wage bill will be reduced by scrapping political seats such as women reps," Oyioka said.
He pleaded with his constituents to back the referendum and shun local leaders who may be out to block it.
The lawmaker urged President Uhuru Kenyatta not to give deaf ears to opposition coalition leader Raila Odinga and set aside funds for the referendum to take place.
He was speaking on Sunday at Nyabioto area in his constituency.
