Kamto was buried at his Bejana farm in Rabai, Kilifi County in a ceremony that was attended by several politicians including his former boss Governor Amason Kingi, and Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya.

Also present were Lungalunga MP Khatib Mwashetani, former Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung'aro who together with Kamto vied to oust Kingi as gubernatorial aspirant and running mate respectively, among other leaders.

Ruto eulogised Kamto who left ODM for Jubilee, as a strong-willed, pragmatic leader, who put the service of his constituents first.

"He advocated dialogue and a working relationship with all leaders across the political divide. Kamto's astute leadership and direction leaves an indelible mark in coastal and national politics," said the DP on Wednesday.

Mwashetani said: "As we lay him to rest may Allah forgive his sins, and the hands of justice befall the perpetrators of that heinous act."

The deceased was shot dead by gunmen at his Nyali home in Mombasa on Jamhuri Day.
