Mid last year, 100 Cuban doctors arrived in the country after the Kenyan government signed a bilateral agreement with the Cuban government to support the country's health sector.
The doctors were spread in major hospitals in all the counties across the country, with the Siaya County Referral Hospital getting two Cuban doctors.
One of the Cuban doctors in Siaya County is Jaquelin Castillo Matamoros who has already learned basic Kiswahili and Dholuo languages in order to enable her to reach out to patients who cannot express themselves in English.
Over the weekend, Citizen TV featured her reaching out to patients in Kiswahili and Dholuo.
“Karibu. Mtoto Mgonjwa?” she is heard speaking to one of her clients who had a sick child.
It translates to “Welcome. Is the child sick?” She has learned parts of the body in Kiswahili such as the chest, fingers and the back which helps her to establish the part of the body that a particular patient is suffering from.
Outside the hospital walls and gates, the family Doctor has learned a host of Dholuo words to help her easily interact with members of the public in the Dholuo dominated Siaya County.
“They say oyaore, oyare ahinya. Idhi nandi, adhi maber, achiew maber,” she says which translates to 'Good morning', how are you and I have woken up well.
