Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Gedi has joined politicians opposing the proposed 8% Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel and petroleum products.
Gedi says she will personally vote against President Uhuru Kenyatta’s proposed 8% VAT on fuel.
The MP says that the proposed VAT is meant to punish poor Kenyans economically.
Speaking at Parliament Buildings on Thursday, the Jubilee MP said that Kenyans stand to suffer if Parliament approves the proposed VAT and budgetary cuts.
The Jubilee MP said that already prices of fuel and other commodities have increased.
She said that things are likely to get worse if the proposed VAT is approved.
“I don’t agree with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s proposal and I will not side with him,” she said.
Fireworks looms in Parliament as MPs will be voting on the proposed 8% VAT on fuel.
A section of MPs allied to President Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has vowed to reject the VAT proposal.
However, Garissa MP Aden Duale has exuded confidence that Uhuru’s proposal will be approved.
