In a session held in Garissa town on Wednesday, the leaders unanimously agreed to participate in the nationwide registration exercise.

According to an update by the RTN Somali Television, the local leadership led by the Garissa Township Member of Parliament Aden Duale accepted the move after hours of sensitisation meeting by several Cabinet Secretaries.

"A section of North Eastern MPs back NIIMS (Huduma number) after meeting CSs Adan, Matiang'i and Mucheru; fears over data gathering during drought met," wrote the local TV channel on its twitter handle

This comes even as Duale who is also the National Assembly leader of majority expressed optimism that the exercise would come with new dawn to Somali youths who have been witnessing challenges in securing national identification cards.

Youths living along the border counties of Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Isiolo have been complaining of being subjected to stringent procedures in the acquisition of the basic identification document at the hands of registration and immigration officials.

During the launch of the nationwide registration exercise on Monday, President Uhuru Kenyatta reiterated that the initiative was mandatory for all eligible Kenyans.
