Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has strongly defended Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, over claims that his administration oversaw the grabbing of the Kibarani dump site.
Kibarani which the county government plans to turn it into a recreational ground, is said to have been reclaimed by private developers as the relocation of the dump site continues.
However, according to Balala, the 80-acre piece of land was grabbed years before Joho became the county boss.
“I was the mayor of Mombasa over 20 years ago. Before I even became mayor, Kibarani had been grabbed," Balala disclosed, affirming that his Ministry would work with Joho's administration to reclaim Kibarani.
The two were speaking following a meeting that was also attended by CS Keriako Tobiko (Environment) on Monday.
On his part, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the Muhammad Swazuri-led National Land Commission (NLC) to revoke the allocation of the Kibarani dump site piece of land to a private developer and instead hand it back to the Mombasa county government.
