Fresh communication indicates that the family of the nation's first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Oginga owes the county government of Kisumu close to Sh8 million in land rates.

According to the Kisumu Land Task Force Committee, Oginga and his eldest son Dr Oburu Odinga are among the defaulters owing the county close to Sh15 billion in unpaid land rates.

On Saturday, the committee chair Nicholas Migot said that Oginga tops the list of defaulters owing the county the most money, in a list that also includes 581 individuals, companies and state corporations.

Jaramogi under whose name the Kisumu Bloc 12/222 is registered reportedly owed the county Sh7,774,099 million, though the top opposition figure died in January 1994.

Oburu who doubles up as the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) member is also a defaulter and is being demanded to pay the Sh295, 743 for his Kisumu bloc 7/509.

Also in the list is Catholic Archbishop Zachaeous Okoth.

The man of God owes the Governor Anyang' Nyong'o led county Sh1,771,933 for his land registered as bloc10/83 and former Cabinet Minister Oloo Aringo who is yet to pay his Sh443 million debt.

The group is now required to pay up by December 21.

“The county government of Kisumu hereby gives notice to the general public and land rate defaulters, that for efficient land rate management and verification of ownership records as captured, the defaulters are directed to pay all their dues by December 21," the county said in a statement quoted by the Nation.
