For around 30 minutes on Sunday, Kanu leader Gideon Moi faced hostility at the troubled Borabu-Sotik border at Chepilat township when he visited a local church for a fund-drive.
Youths allied to Deputy President William Ruto caused chaos in St Philips Anglican Church, chanting anti-Moi slogans.
Throughout their engagement, they were heard condemning Moi, terming him as a betrayer, a claim he would deny later.
"I am not interested in anybody's position for now. Some people get jitters at the mention of my name," said Moi.
He added: "There is no need to hate one another. I have only come to spearhead unity campaigns among the Kalenjins and Abagusii communities."
Later, armed police officers were forced to eject the rowdy youths from the church function as Moi proceeded with his speech.
It was the first visit by Moi to the South Rift, a region that has for years supported Ruto as supremo de facto of the Kalenjin community.
During the event, the Baringo senator also castigated cattle rustlers along the Nyamira-Bomet border, which has reportedly escalated in recent weeks.
