Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has come to the rescue of the embattled poll body, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Speaking on NTV's AM Live Monday morning, the county boss noted that the electoral agency is a victim of political interference.
He added that the Wafula Chebukati-led team's failure is to blame on external forces, especially politicians interested in benefiting via the commission.
‘’The reason why the IEBC does not function is not because the people there are inherently wicked, it is because they are influenced by people from the outside with interests,’’ he said in a tweet on the program’s wall.
The commission has been repeatedly blamed for conducting pre-determined elections, and is yet to convince a section of leaders drawn from the opposition side that the 2017 presidential poll was free and fair.
Some of the leaders are now pushing for its overhaul, after a series of alleged shambolic elections, especially at the presidential level.
This also comes hardly a week after the sacking of the commission Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ezra Chiloba over allegedly flaunting procurement procedures during the previous 2017 general elections.
Further, it is currently operating on a shortage of commissioners, after four of the seven commissioners exited office lamenting of poor working conditions.
