Moi University School of Medicine lecturers on Monday failed to report to work over unpaid clinical allowances.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union branch secretary Dr Ishmael Aiyabei faulted the Vice-Chancellor Isaac Kosgey and the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Chief Executive Officer Wilson Aruasa for neglecting the dons.
He said that the lecturers are not going to report to work until their allowances are paid in full as promised by the government.
The dons said that they had issued the government with a strike notice on June 6 but nothing was done to settle the matter.
The lecturers said that the delay in payment of their allowances has affected them in different ways and they are not ready to play cat and mouse games at the expense of their rights as employees.
“We officially started the strike today. We have stopped giving our services at the Moi University College of Health Sciences. We issued a one-week notice to both the university vice chancellor and MTRH CEO before we downed our tools,” Aiyabei, told Daily Nation.
The lecturers claimed that they are yet to get their allowances dating back to January 1, 2017, and it seems nothing is going on to ensure they are paid with immediate effect. The dons have now suspended all services in different departments until their demands are met.
